Puerto Vallarta fishing Charter review

Puerto Vallarta fishing Charter review by Paul Sojkowski

I had the opportunity to go out on a 12 hour day of fishing with my wife, daughter and father on the”My Marlin,” skippered by Steve Torres and crewed by Oscar on 12/29/15. This is the second year going out w Steve and he does not disappoint. Starting with Damon who does a great job in setting up the trip and communicating all neccessary details, I wanted to have the opportunity to catch a marlin as well as dorado. Steve and Oscar did an outstanding job letting us know what to expect and how the day would unfold. We trolled and had an early dorado hookup. Later Steve found floating debris and it was game on with the dorado. We caught five monster dorado (mostly bulls) I missed one. That gave us a total of 6 for the day. Other boats came to us after seeing our hookups. They weren’t catching anything upon arriving; we had the right bait. The best was yet to come. After about 15 minutes of beginning to troll again, the marlin hit. With superior boat control by Steve, I was able to boat my first blue marlin after a 1/2 hour fight, weighing in at approximately 300 lbs. Right after it was over, Steve said, “Let’s get another one.” That’s confidence. My family and I vacation in PV every Christmas and I would never consider another boat or captain.

Puerto Vallarta fishing Charter review aboard the My Marlin

Determined. This is how I would describe Captain Steve and mate Jose on the fishing vessel “My Marlin”. Their pricing is fair, if not lower than what you get back in the states, they use quality equipment, and they are goal oriented. I am not a professional angler or commercial fisherman. However, I have fished most of my life recreationally and understand it is called fishing and not catching. From the beginning, I told Damon that I wanted to book a 12 to 14 hour trip to try an land a marlin. Upon boarding the boat, Captain Steve and Jose greeted me with excitement and optimism. Captain Steve stated it was going to be a late bite with the full moon the night before. On the way out we discussed his strategy for the day. We would start trolling once we cleared the bay, try and catch bait at the high rock and then proceed to the bank. Upon getting in the area of the high rock, we immediately had a sailfish bite. The fish played with the bait and never took. The guys decided to concentrate on the bait for the marlin and shortly after we boated a nice skipjack and yellow fin tuna. Captain Steve went crazy!!! He kept yelling “WE ARE GOING TO CATCH A BIG FISH WITH THE BIG BAIT!!!”. While trolling a smaller live bait on top water, a big sailfish hit and we boated shortly afterwards. During the sailfish bite, our yellow fin tuna bait died but Steve changed the position of the skipjack and we were back at it again. Captain Steve said we would stay as late as it took to get a bite. Personally knowing how hard he and Jose had worked, if we did not catch another fish, I would have been satisfied with a beautiful day on the ocean with a nice sailfish catch. At 3:15PM it looked as though the sailfish was going to be the fish of the day. Then it happened!!!! When the marlin hit, the boat went into a controlled fire drill. While I had the marlin on rod, Captain Steve yelled instructions and Jose cleared the cockpit area. A little over 2 hours later, the black marlin lay on the deck of the boat. Hi fives and hugs were given out repeatedly. Captain Steve’s hard work had paid off and my goal of catching a BIG BLACK MARLIN had been accomplished. If it had not been for the hard work and dedication of the captain and crew, this event would not have been achieved. If you want a relaxing fishing trip, quality equipment, and a first class captain and crew, book with the guys of PV Sportfishing. When returning to PV Mexico, these guys will be getting another call!!!!!!!!
